Starting over
After a kidnapping, his family had to start over. Starbucks Wi-Fi helped him begin again.
Xavier trained as a chemical engineer in Venezuela, completed a master's degree, and worked in the oil industry. By his account, a kidnapping amid political pressure forced him and his pregnant wife to leave. They came to the United States in 2015 with only a few hundred dollars, no English, and no stable bed waiting for them.
Without internet where they were staying, Xavier used Starbucks Wi-Fi to look for work. A College Hunks Hauling Junk & Moving listing led to an interview and an initial rejection. He could not speak English. A Spanish-speaking employee named Oscar saw him leaving, asked what happened, and advocated for another chance. Xavier returned and accepted an entry-level place in the operation because his family needed a beginning more than his pride needed a title.
